“Oh, I know that place. It’s where Mark and I was ... it’s great.”

“His name is Fabio, an Italian dude I met when I designed his company website for him.”

I placed my arms around her and hugged her tightly.

“Be careful, okay?”

“Okay.”

Bianca turned and dashed through the glass doors of Willow County Mall. I stood as though frozen in time, not sure of where to go or what to do with myself. Perhaps, I was just over-reacting. After all, Mark Warren was an officer of the law.

Perhaps, he just genuinely liked me. Once I had successfully convinced myself that I was being nothing more than paranoid and petty, I climbed into my car and drove back to my apartment.

When I pulled up at the apartment building, the parking lot was eerily quiet and dark. I had never really noticed how haunting it was that late at night. Something in the air all around me did felt wide off the mark. I felt the sweat drench my skin and the thumping of my heart against my chest. My fingers were curled into a fist while my nails began digging into my palms.

I breathed quietly as I nervously glanced around me. Not only were my eyes pulsating around me, but the silence was worse than ringing screams in my ears. I had never been afraid of the dark or the eerie silence, but at that very moment, I was overcome with fear and dread.

There was no-one in sight, and when I finally climbed out of my car, the silence suddenly surrendered to the haunting sounds of footsteps that I was convinced, were approaching me. I was terrified. I could not turn around and face whatever it was that was lurking closer. I suddenly felt someone slam me into my car and breathe rapidly down my neck. I couldn’t hear anything else but the short breaths and the galloping of my own heart in my ears.

I did my best not to make a sound as each second went on forever. What began as a contortion of my stomach turned into a feeling of being smothered by an invisible hand.

My breathing was becoming more erratic as I desperately tried to fight the panic that had suddenly entirely engulfed me. My body warned me that it was about to shut down completely when a violent shudder consumed and weakened me. My legs were paralyzed by fear and my hands were ice cold.

“Hello beautiful ...”

‘Are you shitting me?’
